AF Development Care (AFDC) would like to request Hon. Members of Parliament to raise following important questions to Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labour and Employment and Ministry of Women and Child development to help nearly 7 million poorest beedi rollers to come out from the double burden of poverty and health hazards in the country;

Q.1.  Home based women beedi rollers are exposed to various occupational health problems such as neck and lower back pain, abdominal pain, eye problems, burning in the throat, cough, asthma, tuberculosis, osteological problems and bronchitis. AFDC study also confirms that medical expenditure on work-related illnesses far outweighs their earning from beedi rolling and such information might convince women beedi rollers to become aware of the seriousness of their occupational vulnerabilities and help them shift to other healthy livelihood option. When it is medically proven that continuous inhaling of tobacco dust is killing the rollers, why government of India is not declaring home-based beedi rolling as hazardous?

q.2. As beedi industry owners are making huge profit, strategically working in poor pocket of the country and AFDC study confirms the exploitation of women beedi workers in this work, why is government not come up with a clear guideline on bringing wage parity,
protection mechanism while rolling beedi and providing education for poor women beedi rollers on the impact of home-based beedi rolling on her and her children and family?

Q.3. The foremost focus of skill development must be on those engaged in hazardous working conditions like women beedi rollers, who are exposed to health risks, earn low wages and work without social protection. What is the government plan to skill these women beedi rollers in next 2-3 years period?
